Bee County approves seven LED safety-light upgrades on state and FM intersections

Bee County Commissioners Court on Oct. 14 authorized seven safety and security lighting upgrades, replacing high-pressure sodium fixtures with LED units at selected intersections and community facilities.
Road & Bridge staff described the LED fixtures as substantially brighter and better suited to illuminate dangerous curves and high-traffic intersections on State Highway 181 and connecting Farm-to-Market roads. The locations listed for upgrades included FM 2824 at SH 181 (north of Beeville), West King Lane at SH 181 (north of Normanna), FM 1465 at SH 181 near Toledo, FM 623 at SH 181 in Pettus (near the Dairy Queen), the North Street/SH 181 intersection in Pettus near the school bus route, and Pettus Community Center/Fire Department staging areas.
The presenter said an LED upgrade would cost about $140 per fixture and estimated the total for the seven upgrades at approximately $1,000. Commissioners approved the replacements and asked staff to coordinate installation with Road & Bridge.
The court emphasized pedestrian and motorist safety at school routes and the need to target limited maintenance funds where the lighting will have the greatest safety benefit.
