Board rejects $5,000 county contribution for regional site study after two‑thirds threshold not met

The Marathon County Board of Supervisors voted down a proposed $5,000 allocation to Synergy to review potential economic development sites after the motion failed to meet the two‑thirds threshold required for that item.

Supervisor Zhang introduced the HR/Finance committee's recommendation, but Supervisor Poole argued that county government should not be paying for nonprofit proposals that do not deliver services the county would otherwise fund. "We're generally good proposals by good organizations that county government should just not be funding," Poole said. Supervisor Robinson pushed back, saying the small county contribution would be matched by other counties and private partners and could help market county sites to site selectors.

Administration and staff noted the WEDC commitment in the Synergy presentation was pending and suggested an amendment to withhold county funds until the state grant or match was confirmed. Staff also noted the county could amend the item to require administration to hold off on expending county funds if WEDC did not follow through. Despite that, the motion failed; the chair announced, "The motion fails, it is a 2 thirds majority requirement and the vote is 22 to 12." The result leaves the Synergy request unfunded by the county at this time.

Next steps: Committees or the presenting organization may return with amended language tying county disbursement to external funding commitments, or the topic could be reconsidered in a future meeting if partners secure matching funds.
