The South Huntington Union Free School District Board of Education approved several items during new business at its Nov. 12 meeting, Board President Nicholas Ziappetta recapped.
The board established the Mason Crace Memorial Technical Scholarship, a $500 annual award to be given to a deserving student in memory of Mason, a 2016 graduate. Ziappetta said the scholarship is "designed to keep Mason's spirit, name, and generosity alive." The board also accepted a $1,500 donation from Alex Orthodontics, PLLC and a $1,000 donation from Elliot Leonardo of Signature Premier Properties; both donations were designated to support the district's winter wonderland celebration.
Separately, the board approved a lease agreement between the district and Camp W that will allow students to continue attending the district's summer program at Birchwood Intermediate School. On personnel matters the board approved the appointment of Renee Shum as the first principal of the Silas Wood Pre‑K Center; Ziappetta noted Ms. Shum's long ties to the community as "a longtime resident, teacher, and most recently Birchwood assistant principal." The recap did not include vote tallies, mover/second attributions, or additional contract details.
Ziappetta closed the recap by thanking families and staff and wishing the community a happy Thanksgiving; the board's next meeting was noted for December.
