Trustees approve districtwide access control module upgrade; work to be staged

The Montgomery ISD Board on Nov. 18 approved a contract to upgrade access control infrastructure at district campuses, a purchase above the $50,000 threshold that uses preferred technologies recommended by staff.
Speaker 4 explained the project will update the infrastructure modules that allow card readers to function at campus entry points, and that the upgrade does not itself replace card readers. "This only replaces the module that allows the card reader to work," the presenter said, noting that many installed components date to 2011 and have limited firmware update support.
The presenter explained the district selected Preferred Technologies because the vendor handles the district’s security system coding. Trustees asked about warranty and replacement logistics; staff said product warranties commonly range from 10 to 25 years but that firmware and technology obsolescence remain challenges. Installations will be staged one campus at a time and performed primarily at night to avoid service interruptions.
Trustee Turner moved to approve the purchase and the board approved the motion by voice vote. Staff will proceed to finalize contracts and schedule phased implementation across campuses, beginning with a pilot campus installation and nightly programming to reduce impact during school hours.
