Webster County supervisors table proposed pay increase for IT employee

At its Nov. 4 meeting, the Webster County Board of Supervisors voted to table a proposed pay increase for an IT employee after department and board members said they needed more information, including a job description and budget details.
Chair opened the Nov. 4 Webster County Board of Supervisors meeting and the board considered a request to increase pay for an IT staff member identified by first name, Nate. Andy McGill, identified himself as the county IT director and asked the board to approve the raise, saying Nate's job has shifted from help-desk tasks to higher-level duties including software and website support, election programming and staff training.
"He's moving away from the technician's type of role to more of a software support, website support, and election, coding, and support," McGill said, adding that by taking on election programming the employee was saving the county thousands in outside vendor costs.
Several supervisors said they were not consulted before the item appeared on the agenda and asked for more documentation. One supervisor said, "I don't think anybody's punishing Nate," but emphasized the need for a job description and budget analysis before approving a substantial salary change. The board discussed whether the pay change could be made retroactive if approved at the next meeting.
After discussion, the board moved and seconded a motion to table the pay increase for two weeks so staff could supply the requested job description and budget information. Chair announced the motion carried.
