Potter County Commissioners Court on Oct. 13 approved renewal of the county's workers' compensation coverage with Deep East Texas Self Insurance Fund for the period Nov. 1, 2025, through Sept. 30, 2026.
S12, who reviewed the premium summary, said the proposed premium increases from $221,000 to $275,000, a change he described as ``a 25% increase.'' He said the rise stems not from rate increases but from a corrected annual payroll report used to calculate the premium: the county's reported payroll was updated to about $39,989,000 after prior years had been underreported by one or two months.
S12 told the court the fund will not seek retroactive corrections for prior years and that the county's accrual practices mean the workers' compensation accrual balance is not underfunded. Commissioners asked whether the change creates a shortfall; staff responded the balance is actually overfunded because payroll was historically underreported for several years.
After discussion and confirmation that quotes from other carriers had been solicited (TAC and Texas Mutual provided higher quotes or declined), the court moved to approve the renewal as presented; the motion passed 5–0.
