Council OKs retaining $22,370 leftover for Burdett Park grading project

Vanderburgh County Council approved a request to retain $22,370 remaining from a prior appropriation to apply to grading and drainage work at the former batting-cage site in Burdett Park.
Zach Waltham, Burdett Park director, explained the original appropriation of $51,170 was for removal of an abandoned baseball complex; because the highway department assisted with dugouts and fencing, the rebid came in at $28,800 and left an unspent balance. Waltham said the retained funds would be used this calendar year to regrade the old batting-cage area so it drains properly, be seeded and strawed, and ultimately serve as parking or a future building site.
Councilors asked about procurement timing, whether funds were encumbered, and the quantity and type of fill (Waltham estimated about 950 cubic yards of mostly clay and topsoil sourced locally). Waltham confirmed no additional appropriation was required and the work would be paid for this year. A motion to approve retaining the funds passed unanimously by roll call.
