Land use committee forwards family farmstead subdivision variance to county board

LaSalle County’s Land Use Committee on Dec. 3 voted to forward a subdivision variance to the full county board that would permit a farmstead split and reduce the required road frontage from 150 feet to 40 feet.
The request was brought by a petitioner identified as Mr. Lyons, who said the parcel ‘‘is about 2.8 acres’’ according to Farm Service Agency measurements and that the proposed 40-foot lane ‘‘wouldn't take land out of production,’’ a primary concern for the family. Staff explained the subdivision ordinance is handled by the land use committee as a recommendation to the county board and that the process requires an application fee and a road commissioner sign-off.
Committee members asked routine procedural questions about hearing requirements and jurisdiction. Brent, a county staff member, clarified that subdivision variances proceed through the land use committee and are then presented to the county board as a resolution and do not require a separate public hearing. After discussion the committee made a motion and approved forwarding the item to the county board.
The committee did not reach a final decision on the variance; the full county board will consider the resolution at its next meeting. The committee packet includes the petition and the road commissioner sign-off referenced by staff.
