Berkeley County releases draft student assignment plan to ease overcrowding, proposes two new schools
Consultant Mike Miller presented a draft 2026-27 student assignment plan on Oct. 6 that proposes a new elementary (Beechtree Elementary, capacity ~1,393) and a Midtown Middle School (~1,193) and several boundary shifts to relieve severe crowding at schools such as Cane Bay (about 162% of design capacity). The district will hold community meetings in October with November/December board actions anticipated.

Berkeley County officials on Oct. 6 unveiled a draft student assignment plan intended to relieve chronic overcrowding and accommodate projected growth.
