ISU presidential search committee votes to enter closed session, selects eight semifinalist candidate numbers

At a meeting of the Iowa State University presidential search committee, members voted to enter a closed session under Iowa law to evaluate applicants and, following that confidential review, announced eight candidate numbers as semifinalists.
"So in support of confidentiality, again, it is absolutely critical that the closed session conversation remain in closed session," said Board of Regents counsel Amy Clays as she reviewed the legal limits on discussion in closed session and explained that final action cannot be taken there.
After the closed-session evaluation the committee announced that the eight candidates selected to proceed to virtual semifinalist interviews are candidate 23, 25, 32, 38, 43, 48, 49 and 72. Committee members said the virtual semifinal interviews are scheduled for Oct. 20–22 and will take place in closed session; candidate identities will remain confidential at that stage.
Committee organizers said the board office will assemble interview time slots and notify candidates immediately of the dates and scheduling details. The committee emphasized that each semifinal interview will use the same primary questions so all candidates are evaluated consistently during the allocated 90 minutes; members may ask follow-up questions.
The committee also described the next public-facing phase: finalists will be invited to campus during the first week in November, with one finalist scheduled per day. Each finalist visit will include meetings with selected campus community members and an open forum that will be open to the public and livestreamed. The committee said it will identify each finalist by name publicly the day before that person visits campus.
The Board of Regents will review finalists in closed session on Nov. 11 and is expected to make the final selection later that day, according to the committee announcement.
The committee took the formal step of voting to enter closed session in accordance with Iowa Code §21.5(1)(i) for the purpose of evaluating the professional competency of applicants. A roll-call vote was recorded and the motion was approved by the committee.
