Policy committee approves overtime pay rules for maintenance employees

The Policy Committee of the Whole in Tangipahoa Parish approved a revision on Oct. 21, 2025, to formally codify overtime compensation for maintenance employees.

The committee voted to adopt administration’s recommendation to add overtime language into district policy. Under the revision, maintenance employees will receive time-and-a-half for work performed on Saturdays regardless of whether they have completed a 40-hour workweek, and double pay for work performed on Sundays or official holidays.

Committee members made the motion to adopt and seconded it; no substantive opposition was recorded during discussion. The chair called a roll-call vote and the motion passed.

The proposed policy language reads that maintenance employees “shall receive overtime compensation at 1 and a half times their regular rate of pay for all work performed on Saturdays regardless of whether the employee has completed 40 hour work week. Work performed on Sundays or holidays is ... compensated at double the employee’s regular rate of pay regardless of hours worked during the week.” The language was presented to the committee for formal adoption into policy.

School staff and committee members did not raise fiscal figures or an implementation timetable during the meeting; the change was adopted as a policy revision at the meeting and will be reflected in board policy documents.

The committee moved on to other business after the vote; no further timeline for implementation was provided at the meeting.
