UW Extension reports staff changes, program highlights and nutrition educator cuts

The presenter said the office has continued recruitment for a horticulture assistant coordinator (one failed search, new interviews scheduled) and has added program staff to support the 4‑H youth program. Extension reported 21 active 4‑H clubs, 13 junior fair ambassadors and growth in Cloverbud programming (five‑ to seven‑year‑olds), with monthly meetings drawing 15 to 20 children.
On community‑based health and nutrition (CNP), Extension said state SNAP funding cuts reduced the county’s CNP educator team from three to one as of the fiscal year end (Sept. 30), and that reporting has been slow because the state office also lost staff. Extension asked commissioners for patience as staff work to compile performance reports.
The presenter noted vehicle fleet issues — one Pacifica vehicle has exceeded 120,000 miles and may be retired, and a van used for outreach is aging — and asked the commission to consider replacement options in future budget discussions. Commissioners thanked staff for their work and accepted the update.
