Artists selected for public art at 1500 Mission Street project

Planning Department staff briefed the commission on a required public art condition for the 39‑story mixed‑use tower at 1500 Mission Street during the Dec. 19 hearing.
Christy Alexander said the project — approved in 2017 — will provide public art equal to 1% of hard construction costs as a condition of approval. The building, a roughly 396‑foot tower with about 550 units including 110 below‑market‑rate units, is expected to receive temporary occupancy in March 2020, Alexander said.
Art consultant and project sponsor Jessica Silverman described two commissioned works: Berlin‑based Shannon Finley’s 15‑foot stainless steel sculpture, titled Floating Points, to be integrated into the Mission Street façade, and San Francisco artist Catherine Wagner’s laser‑cut aluminum panels, Prevailing Winds, to line the Van Ness sidewalk. "The statuesque piece is striking but meditative," Silverman said of Finley’s work, and she described Wagner’s panels as both poetic and functional — designed after Bay Area wind patterns.
Staff noted final concepts and locations will be submitted to the planning director for review in consultation with the commission as required by condition of approval. There was no public opposition during the presentation phase.
