Troup County IT staff told commissioners on Sept. 16 that about 80 county computers cannot be upgraded to Windows 11 and will need replacement before Microsoft ends Windows 10 support.
Presenters Jason and Alan said they identified the 80 machines earlier in the year and that vendor quotes (from Dell and others) vary and typically expire after about a month. Staff estimated the cost to replace the group of machines at approximately $58,000 and stressed that Microsoft’s end-of-support (mid-October) means the county would stop receiving security updates, which could create vulnerabilities. They noted the county’s total fleet is roughly 450 computers and that rolling replacement has already upgraded many systems; these remaining 80 are the oldest and cannot be upgraded in place.
Commissioners asked about budget availability and timing to receive and deploy new machines; staff said procurement and migration take time because of installed software and the need to preserve user files, and that prompt action would improve the chance of having replacements in place before updates cease.
Staff said procurement had been anticipated in the current budget and that updated quotes would be provided for the commission’s evening meeting.
