Derek Hershey presented the board with two policy reviews and said legal counsel advised tightening legal language and transferring procedural complaint steps into regulations rather than keeping them inside policy.
On GAAA (Equal Opportunity Employment), Hershey said the substantive policy remains largely unchanged but the complaints procedure and other procedural items were moved into the district’s regulations to preserve flexibility, particularly if federal Title IX procedures change. "The policy remains the same. How we enact it in terms of the procedures we carry out with investigations... turns into procedural items, pertaining to how we're going to enact the policy, and that's where we've moved that into our regs," Hershey said.
On GARH (Employee Leaves and Absences), Hershey said the policy was updated in response to new state legislation effective July 1 that mandates leave for organ and bone-marrow donors. He also said legal counsel advised adding language allowing the superintendent to refuse personal professional leave if qualified substitutes are not available.
Chair said both policies will "sit for public review for 30 days and then they'll be brought back to the board for adoption," inviting public feedback during that period. No substantive questions were raised during the work session.
What’s next: The policies will be available for public comment for 30 days before returning to the board for a future adoption vote.
