Commissioners approve $25,000 to Next Level Community Development for after‑school programs

Macon‑Bibb County commissioners on Oct. 21 approved a resolution to authorize a $25,000 professional services agreement with Next Level Community Development Center to support after‑school programming. The item was sponsored by Commissioner Jobe Hewitt and co‑sponsored by Commissioner Bronson and moved and seconded before passing by unanimous voice vote and being placed on the consent agenda.
At the meeting Next Level representative Lakesha Toomer said the organization serves 14 Macon‑Bibb schools, naming Veterans Elementary, Ballard Hudson Middle, Southwest High, Central High, Rutland Middle and Rutland High among others. Toomer told the commission Next Level served 263 children during Camp Zion in summer 2025 and currently has 98 children enrolled in after‑school programming; she said enrollment is income‑based and prioritizes the most vulnerable students.
The chair described the $25,000 as temporary gap funding while federal and other grant payments are delayed and noted the county’s forthcoming Macon Violence Prevention grant program will provide longer‑term support. Commissioners praised the organization’s long‑term work in the community and asked that the county continue to coordinate funding so after‑school services are not interrupted.
The motion to approve was put forward, seconded and carried by voice vote, and the contract was sent to the consent agenda for formal ratification.
