Board authorizes continued work on Tatum School agreement for new fire station and bus storage easement

The Troup County Board of Commissioners on Sept. 2 authorized county staff to continue negotiating and finalize an agreement with the school board to use the former Tatum School site for a new prototype fire station and to grant a perpetual easement to store up to 15 Troup County school buses on the rear of the property.
County Manager Mosley described the history: the city of LaGrange earlier abandoned Station 14 near the airport, the county took over that facility, and the plan is to relocate the station into unincorporated county limits at the old Tatum School off Roanoke Road to improve coverage and potentially lower homeowners' ISO ratings. Mosley said construction funding for the facility is expected to come from SPLOST 5.
Mosley told commissioners the board previously approved civil engineering work; the current motion authorized staff to work with the school board and clarify remaining contract language and return with a final document for board approval. As part of the agreement, the county would provide a perpetual easement to allow bus access and storage for up to 15 buses for the Troup County school system.
Commissioners discussed how the current Station 14 facility could be repurposed for county use (for example, facility maintenance storage) and noted interest in relocating certain city apparatus to the new location. The board voted to move forward with finalizing the contract and to return it for subsequent approval.
