Board authorizes continued use of Bond & King special counsel for investigations; trustee abstains

The Carmel Central School District Board of Education voted Sept. 9 to continue using the law firm Bond & King and Howard Miller, Esq., as special counsel for board- and central-administration investigations.
President Orser read the resolution extending the engagement, citing a letter of engagement executed July 24 to authorize special-counsel services for the 2024–25 academic year. The board recorded the contract rates on the record: "It is the rate of $300 an hour for a partner and a senior counsel and $250 an hour for an associate," the president said.
Trustee Wise said she would abstain from the vote; the motion passed. Trustees asked the administration to provide a future accounting of how much the district has spent under the contract to date.
The board did not specify an estimated total cost in the resolution, and the president said he did not know how long special counsel services will be required; trustees requested a future report on expenditures and duration.
