Carmel Central restores grant-funded float nurse position to meet student needs

The Carmel Central School District Board of Education voted Sept. 9 to approve personnel requests that include reestablishing a grant-funded float nurse position for the 2024–25 school year.
President Orser announced the creation of the float nurse and said the move responds to specific student needs identified by staff: "There is the creation of a nurse, a float nurse, that is gonna be funded through the grants," he said. Trustees asked whether the position is a new recurring cost or a short-term fix; the superintendent explained that IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) allocations — which provide district funding tied to students with disabilities — will be used and that portions of the funding are ongoing, though allotments change year to year.
Trustees also discussed prior reliance on a nursing agency and noted that in some cases agency coverage can be more expensive than hiring district staff familiar with students' needs. The superintendent said the district will continue its contract with the nursing agency where needed but restored the float nurse to provide consistent support for students with individualized needs.
The personnel motion, which included this position and other approved stipends and hires, passed on a voice vote.
