County accepts 160‑acre federal patent to site a managed shooting range

The Utah County Commission unanimously approved acceptance of a land patent deed from the United States for approximately 160 acres west of Soldier Pass Road intended for a managed shooting range.
Richard (county staff) and other presenters said the Recreation and Public Purposes (R&PP) patent originated from a BLM application made in coordination with the sheriff's office and wildlife and resource partners. "It actually started with a request from BLM and in conjunction with the sheriff's office, DWR and CITLA," a staff member said, summarizing the interagency effort.
County staff described plans for a range complex with 25‑, 100‑ and 300‑yard protected ranges, shooting lines, berms and fencing to concentrate recreational shooting in a maintained facility, reduce dispersed shooting on the mountainside and provide garbage pickup and potential future amenities such as restrooms as budget permits. The commission voted to accept the patent deed for the shooting‑range property; the motion passed 3–0.
Next steps: staff will proceed with the recorded right‑of‑way and the initial site management tasks discussed in previous agenda actions.
