EMS reports training, staffing changes and $29,615 grant for power-load system

Brady, speaking for county emergency medical services, said the department handled 104 EMS calls during the previous month and has been running targeted training exercises for lifeguards and staff.
"We were granted $29,615.38 for the new power load system," Brady said, reporting that the department has roughly $35,000 on hand and is gathering bids for a complete power-load system and a new cot. Brady said the combined cost for a power-load system and a new cot could approach $65,000, but staff believe an adapter kit may allow an existing cot to work with the new power-load system at lower cost.
Brady described in-house training conducted with dispatch to simulate high-stress scenarios, including an opioid-response exercise and live CPR training at a local pool. He said the department also has hired two employees (one full-time, one part-time) and plans extra ambulance staffing for the RAGBRAI event.
Separately, Brady reported repeated internet and phone outages caused by a damaged buried cable and said the county is coordinating with MediaCom and the third-party contractor to restore service. He said outages have caused several 24-hour service interruptions over recent weeks and that the company is working to reroute the line around a construction site.
The board heard the EMS update as an informational presentation; no formal vote or appropriation was recorded at the meeting. Staff said they will return with final quotes and any needed appropriation requests.
