Board approves Maiden High reroofing, mobile-classroom change order and Maiden Middle HVAC adjustments; auditorium lighting tabled

The Catawba County Board of Education approved multiple construction and facilities items at its Aug. 25 meeting, including a reroofing award for Maiden High School and several project change directives.
Dan Moore presented updates on recent projects and multiple procurement items. For Maiden High School, the lowest responsive bidder for the reroofing project was Davco Roofing & Sheet Metal LLC; after accepting two alternates (omitting an awning and fascia wall panel replacements) the recommended award amount was $2,052,200. Moore said the work will address valleys and problem areas over the auditorium and athletic areas, carries a 20‑year watertightness warranty and a 40‑year finished warranty for the roofing material, and would begin after a preconstruction meeting with a 200‑day window to complete the contract. The board approved awarding the bid and the related contract.
Moore also outlined a TIPs USA purchasing-cooperative contract with Barbizon Lighting (Charlotte) for auditorium lighting upgrades at Maiden High School totaling $133,174.36. Board members asked specifically about warranty length and installation timing; the board voted unanimously to table that item until warranty information is provided.
The board approved a potential change order PC#3 for Saint Stephen's Elementary School to remove a light pole and terminate the power feed to allow placement of modular classrooms; the amount for that work was $5,392.33. Moore said modular classrooms were up and running and that some HVAC items for the installation remain under resolution.
For Maiden Middle School's HVAC replacement project, Moore requested approval of four change directives: relocation of domestic hot/cold water lines and vents ($9,245); patching and painting of masonry walls and classroom door frames ($3,655); scrubbing and waxing approximately 65,000 sq. ft. of floors ($11,825); and painting a stripe adjacent to a newly installed ceiling ($1,505). The board approved those change directives and the associated contingency updates by motion.
Earlier, Moore reported that Maiden Elementary site conversion work — paving, striping, playground installation and sidewalk connections — is largely complete and that Maiden Middle's major HVAC work (a roughly $4.5 million summer effort) is substantially finished with gas hookups and testing remaining through the fall.
Where questions arose, staff committed to provide additional warranty and timeline details at a subsequent meeting before work begins on tabled items.
