Cleveland City Schools outlines AI policy and training, approves district tools including Magic School and ChatGPT usage rules

Dr. Cody Raper, the district’s director of innovation and technology, told the board June 2 that Tennessee law requires yearly updates on artificial intelligence uses and the board has adopted local policy 4.214 to guide training and reporting.
Raper said the district provides beginning-of-year training for teachers on policy and appropriate uses of AI, and uses Digital Safety Week to teach students age-appropriate guidelines. He explained the district maintains a vetted list of approved AI programs: OpenAI/ChatGPT may be used without an account in grades K–8 and with an account in grades 9–12 and by staff; Google Gemini is restricted to staff per Google’s terms of use; Canva and Kami (tools with AI features) are also on the vetted list.
The district has purchased Magic School as a district-managed platform that provides accounts, monitoring and controls for classroom AI use. "Magic School does things like, if we accidentally forget and put a student name into something that's submitted, it's gonna redact it and then give a quick, hey, remember not to do this in the future," Raper said. He added the platform enables teachers to create student 'rooms' the teacher controls to ensure a safe environment for AI use.
Board members suggested additional tools (NotebookLM) and praised district training and STEM alignment; Raper said administrators already have an internal NotebookLM instance loaded with PowerSchool documents to help staff find internal guidance.
Raper said he will report the board’s AI update to the state by July 1, per the legal requirement in the policy.
