Two veterans and community advocates asked the Owensboro City Commission to restore the World War II memorial and to support a new monument honoring female veterans.
Melody Wallace, a teacher, U.S. Navy veteran and board member of Veterans Empowered Together, described a three-figure concept (a World War II nurse, a modern female soldier and a young girl representing past, present and future female veterans) and said sculptor George Lundin (who created the nearby Nikki Hayden sculpture) agreed to create the piece. She asked the commission to consider a portion of the riverfront near the Schult Memorial for placement.
Natasha Concrete, an Army veteran and local business owner, said Owensboro has no monument that specifically honors female veterans and urged restoration of the World War II memorial as well as new recognition for women who served. She named two Owensboro women — PFC Vivian Hayden and Army Nurse Corps member Mary Josephine Oberst — as examples the community should honor.
Both speakers requested city assistance (land and support) for the project. The commission did not take a formal vote or make a commitment during the meeting; no staff report or agenda item for a monument or restoration was recorded at this session.
