Augusta planning commission approves conditional use for parks department admin trailer; goes to council Oct. 20

The Augusta Planning Commission voted to approve Conditional Use Permit 2025‑14, allowing a construction administration trailer to serve as temporary administrative space for the parks department at the property listed in staff materials as 1301 North Ohio.

Staff recommended the conditional use after explaining the parks building failed a Department of Labor audit and is not currently adequate for employees to operate out of. Staff said the city is building a new public works campus where the parks department is intended to move, but those projects will proceed in phases and could take a couple of years. To avoid repeated temporary‑use requests, staff recommended a conditional use permit with conditions instead of a series of temporary permits.

Staff recommended approval with conditions limiting the front setback to 30 feet and the street‑side setback to 15 feet to better align the temporary placement with the neighborhood context. “This conditional approve is approved by the planning commission. It will go to city council on October 20 for final approval,” Staff said during the hearing.

Commissioner (S3) asked about the future of the existing parks building; Staff said structural engineers are assessing the building and no final plans had been set. Commissioner (S2) moved to approve CUP2025‑14 with the stated conditions; the motion was seconded and the commission voted in favor.
