Alexandria Public School District hears how Sewing Roots childcare kept district staff on the job

Vanessa Solars, owner and operator of Sewing Roots Childcare, told the school board the in‑district program opened in September 2023 after she secured licensing and set up space in the Early Education Center. Solars said the program provides staff with access to quiet and active spaces, uses district playgrounds and trails, and includes a private nursing area so parents who work in the building can nurse or pump without leaving work.

Caitlin Sander, the district’s childcare coordinator, described how Sewing Roots affected her ability to remain employed. "Within two weeks of starting I couldn't find childcare for my own children," Sander said. After Sewing Roots opened, she said, both daughters were able to attend and she no longer faced hours‑long commutes to childcare. "Because of Sewing Roots, I stayed with Alexandria Public Schools," Sander said, adding that the program “lifted a weight” from her family.

District staff described the program’s early enrollment trajectory: after initial weeks of transfers and paperwork, enrollment grew week by week. Solars said the program’s features — a separate sleeping room, drop‑off/pick‑up support for preschoolers and proximity to district facilities — make it feasible for working parents. She also outlined small future ideas such as a garden box and family volunteer events.

The board thanked Solars and heard additional parent testimony underscoring the program’s role in retention and daily logistics for staff with infants and toddlers. Board members noted the program fills a district‑wide child care gap and asked staff to continue reporting enrollment and operational updates.

The presentation concluded with board appreciation and an invitation for board members to schedule a tour of Sewing Roots in the Early Education Center.
