Floyd County commissioners table request to supplement WIC coordinator’s hours

Krista, a member of the Floyd County WIC staff, told commissioners the state is cutting the county WIC budget for the fiscal year that begins Oct. 1, and that the local WIC coordinator will lose two work hours weekly. She asked the county to supplement the coordinator’s pay with $3,470.48 for salary and $758.30 for fringe benefits to preserve client services.

Krista said the lost hours would reduce the program’s capacity and that WIC has high staff turnover; she said the requested county supplement would run from Oct. 1 through Sept. 30, 2026. Commissioners discussed possible funding sources, including the riverboat fund, and whether the county could approve intent to fund now and advertise an additional appropriation before formally moving money.

A motion to fund the request from the riverboat fund was moved, rescinded and resubmitted in discussion; staff and commissioners noted the county could approve intent tonight and complete the advertised appropriation next month. Because of questions about precise budgeting and advertisement requirements, the board voted to table the funding request to the October meeting so the appropriation can be advertised and finalized.

The board’s action was procedural: the request was not denied but deferred pending formal appropriation and budget advertisement. The WIC representative said she would return in October.
