Scott County seeks upgrades to in‑vehicle communications, cameras and vehicle intelligence systems

Scott County staff told the Board of Supervisors on Sept. 23 that aging vehicle communication gateways and in‑car cameras in public‑safety fleets need replacement and that the county must also replace an end‑of‑life ambulance vehicle intelligence system.
S8 said the current gateways are about seven years old (typical lifespan five to seven years) and requested authority to replace 40 MG‑90 gateways with XR‑80 gateways in sheriff and conservation vehicles, with installation costs borne by the respective teams; the gateway purchase was described as roughly $84,000. S8 said previously planned piecemeal replacement was complicated when the vendor was bought and technology changed.
S8 also asked to replace the remaining 20 in‑car cameras that are incompatible with the new 5G gateways; staff said bundling gateway and camera installs will save on installation costs.
Separately, S12 (Paul) described an RFP process that produced a single compliant response from AceTech/Astec to replace the county’s ZOLL vehicle intelligence product for ambulances after ZOLL announced end‑of‑life. “We’re seeking board approval to go ahead and purchase this AceTech product for $179,310, and that includes a five‑year subscription,” S12 said. Staff said the vendor told the county many manufacturers prefer larger fleets, explaining the single response.
Supervisors asked about subscription and hardware breakdowns, current costs with ZOLL, and the vendor training plan; staff said the purchase includes training and that local IT staff will be trained to perform troubleshooting and limited installs.
