Council approves purchase of 25 traffic controllers despite small budget shortfall

The Valdosta mayor and council approved the purchase of 25 traffic controllers at their May 22 meeting despite a modest budget overrun.
City Engineer Ben O'Dowd told council the city budgets this purchase annually to restock inventory and had budgeted $52,000 for FY25. He said the low bid for 25 controllers was $59,251.25 and that staff requested approval for the purchase from SPLOST 8 funds despite the overage.
A councilmember moved to approve the request, the motion was seconded, and council approved the purchase by show of hands.
Staff said the items are a regular annual purchase and are being acquired to maintain intersection controller inventory.
