LaPorte County approves three settlements and will finalize documents by month-end

Counsel asked for authority to settle Cerneic v. Stables/LaPorte County commissioners for $2,828.69, saying the amount represented the total settlement. "The total amount of the settlement would be $2,828.69," counsel said, and the board authorized counsel to finalize the matter by voice vote.
On opioid litigation, counsel summarized two follow-up items. For the Sandoz settlement, handled through multidistrict litigation representation by Cohen & Millard, counsel recommended the county enter the nationwide settlement; commissioners approved the recommendation. Counsel said no county-specific dollar amount was available in the meeting for the Sandoz item.
For Purdue Pharma matters, counsel explained the Sackler-family-related claims remain in Chapter 11 bankruptcy and a new plan had been filed and circulated to claimants. He described the expected recovery as limited — "pennies on the dollar" — but recommended pursuing the claim through the bankruptcy process; commissioners voted to pursue it. Counsel said DocuSign packets for the settlements would be routed to the board president for signature and needed to be filed by the end of the month.
What’s next: County counsel will execute settlement paperwork via DocuSign and submit required filings by the end of the month; no county-specific amounts were provided for the MDL Sandoz item or the Purdue bankruptcy allocation at the meeting.
