Kent Local board approves resolution to place renewal levy on the ballot

The Kent Local Board of Education voted June 16 to place a renewal tax levy on the ballot, approving a resolution that staff said is required in its current statutory language and that shows examples of homeowner cost for a $100,000 home.

Staff explained that the ballot wording must list specified dollar amounts and that, while the ballot language can appear higher, the levy’s effective rate is lower. “It shows here, it lists the dollar amounts on what it would cost an owner of a $100,000 home,” the finance presenter said, and described the measure as effectively a 10.8‑mill levy in current terms.

The board followed staff’s recommendation and approved the resolution to place the renewal levy before voters. The measure follows a prior resolution of intent and includes certification from the county auditor, staff said. Board members completed a roll‑call vote in favor of placing the renewal levy on the ballot.

The vote sets the district up to ask voters to renew existing operating millage; staff noted the district’s projections and tax calculations may be affected by state rules and recent property reappraisals. The presenter warned that second‑half property tax collections could be affected by pending value challenges and refunds, which could temper receipts in the coming months.

The board did not discuss a final campaign plan or ballot date during the meeting; staff said required language and auditor certification are now included in the resolution and the district will proceed with the election steps required by law.
