District expands career dual‑enrollment programs at high schools

Miami‑Dade County Public Schools announced Tuesday it will expand career dual‑enrollment programs so more high‑school students can earn industry credentials and enter high‑demand fields without incurring post‑secondary debt.
Rene Montilla of the district’s Office of Postsecondary, Career and Technical Education outlined the new offerings at specific high schools: automotive service technology (Hialeah Senior High), medical assisting (Miami Carol City Senior High), dental assisting (Miami Northwestern Senior High), avionics and medical assisting (Miami Springs Senior High), and aviation power‑plant mechanics at the George C. Baker Aviation Technical College extension campus. Montilla said the expansions will serve from 25 to 110 students per program year depending on the pathway and that programs were funded by competitive grants and industry performance funds rather than the general fund.
"These programs are focused on high‑demand, high‑wage fields," Montilla said, and noted career outcomes, citing median annual salary estimates for several pathways. He added locating programs on high‑school campuses reduces the need for center‑to‑center transportation and associated costs.
Superintendent Dotres and board members praised the expansion as aligning workforce development with student opportunity, and the board received the informational report without objection.
