A motion to eliminate the district’s Director of Human Resources position effective Sept. 20, 2025 failed after a split roll call at the Washington Township Board of Education work session.
The motion was introduced during discussion of budget gap-closing options. Supporters said removing the director would produce immediate cost savings. Opponents — including several board members — warned that removing a central HR position could expose the district to legal risk, slow investigations and hiring, and shift substantial duties onto administrators already carrying heavy workloads. One member warned the board could “get ourselves self-sued” if HR responsibilities were not handled properly.
Board members also noted the technical requirement to hold a vote to fill any position that becomes vacant, and discussed temporary redistribution of duties to an assistant business administrator or building supervisors only if legally and operationally appropriate.
At roll call the motion did not receive enough affirmative votes and the chair announced it failed. No immediate personnel action followed.
The debate occurred amid broader concern from the public and board members about the district’s long-term budget picture and staffing shortages. Board members asked administration to provide more detailed options on staffing costs and legal implications before bringing any future staffing elimination to a vote.
What’s next: Board members asked administration to return with options for reassigning duties, the legal consequences of eliminating the position, and precise estimates of any short- and long-term savings before a renewed proposal is contemplated.
