Wayne County panel approves 38‑acre amendment to Amelia mine permit

Renner said the added acreage includes areas necessary to reach US‑84 and to construct interior road crossings. He said the change is an amendment to an existing permit and, if approved locally, the company will submit the revised land‑use plan to the Georgia Environmental Protection Division for state review. “We’re going to add 38 acres to the 5,100 acres we already have permitted,” Renner told the commission.
Renner and Stuart Robertson, a mine engineer who accompanied him, said the amendment largely cleans up boundary lines and adds interior road crossings; the company will post an additional reclamation bond for the new acreage. Commissioners asked whether the mill would be relocated; Renner said feasibility work is underway and federal funding for critical‑minerals projects could affect the final site decision. He said the company hopes to be producing at Amelia B by the end of next year and expects to operate in Wayne County for about a decade.
After discussion, a commissioner moved to approve the amendment adding the 38 acres; the motion was seconded and passed on roll call, with Commissioners Gordon, Thomas and Franks recorded as voting “yes.” The county will now document the local approval and the company will submit the amended plan to Georgia EPD for its review and any required permits or bond postings.
What’s next: Staff records indicate the company must post the additional reclamation bond and complete state permitting with Georgia EPD before expanding operations into the newly included acreage.
