Council accepts Circle Advisory Committee plan, limits monuments and proposes code changes

The Georgetown Town Council voted Sept. 22 to accept the Circle Advisory Committee’s recommendations on monuments, memorial types and traffic-safety improvements for the town circle.

Staff presented the committee’s history and work: the committee met seven times since August 2024 to focus on safety, traffic calming and protection for the circle. Completed items included replacing one-way signs with chevrons and installing roundabout-ahead and 15 mph signs at entrances; in-progress items included a speed-feedback sign and a new street light at the North Bedford entrance. The committee recommended locating two monuments on the circle — a monument to Patrolman Chad Spicer and one to Chief Harvey Gregg — and recommended that other memorials be limited to one of four types (a brass plaque, a paver or marker, a paver or brick, or a memorial bench).

The committee also proposed crash-perimeter protection (bollards) at the four entry points where vehicles have entered the circle; staff said the town engineer would design the protection and that observations of past accidents informed the recommended locations.

After the presentation, council members asked clarifying questions and conducted a roll call. The council approved the committee’s recommendations unanimously.

The committee’s presentation named participating citizens and staff who assisted the process and included illustrations of the allowed memorial types. Councilors noted appreciation for committee collaboration and thanked members for their service.
