CSAC approves 2025 meeting and rulemaking calendars, reappoints medical advisors and honors two retirees

At its Dec. 9 meeting, the California State Athletic Commission approved administrative items for 2025, reappointed medical advisory committee members, discussed supplemental malpractice coverage for ringside physicians and recognized two long-serving staff members who are retiring.
The commission replaced the March meeting date with Jan. 20, 2025, to coincide with a Los Angeles event and approved the rest of the proposed 2025 meeting dates (June 2, Sept. 8 and Dec. 8). Commissioners also voted to approve the commission's 2025 rulemaking calendar, which Executive Officer Andy Foster said came from the Department of Consumer Affairs.
Foster recommended reappointing the existing medical advisory committee (Dr. Wallace as chair, Dr. Iinde, Dr. Rand, Dr. Schleimer, Dr. Ruelas) and adding Dr. Gary Furness to replace a retiree; the commission approved the slate. On malpractice coverage, Foster asked staff to investigate supplemental insurance for ringside physicians and return with recommendations; Doctor Williams said physicians must feel protected and supported.
The commission recognized referee Jack Reese for 26 years of service; Reese said he would step down from refereeing to focus on judging and training and thanked the commission and staff. The commission also thanked longtime general counsel Ken Swenson on his retirement; Swenson said it had been an honor to serve.
Foster reported commission deposits of about $880,000, $37,000 each to neurological and boxer pension funds, $20,632 for MMA retirement benefit, and a Raymond James investment account balance of $4.7 million. He also updated commissioners on progress toward a CSAC specialty license plate and upcoming events and training program milestones from delegated entities.
The commission closed with public comments thanking Jack Reese and with an international observer from New Zealand introducing herself as part of regulatory reform work.
