The Department of Elections asked the committee to approve a two‑year extension to its contract with Dominion Voting Systems so the city can continue to operate ranked‑choice elections while a separate project scopes development of an open‑source voting system. John Ernst, Director of Elections, said the current system is the only certified option to run the city’s ranked‑choice tabulation and that the city has allocated $300,000 in FY 2016‑17 to scope and hire a consultant to evaluate an open‑source alternative.
