Sayreville planning board authorizes study of mini-mall redevelopment area

The Sayreville Planning Board voted to adopt Resolution 2024-289, authorizing a preliminary investigation into whether a collection of parcels around the mini-mall area meet the statutory criteria to be designated an area in need of redevelopment.
Clerk Beth read the referral and identified roughly 15 blocks and lots included in the request from the borough. Jay, the board’s engineer, said the request came from the redevelopment agency to the mayor and council and was then referred to the planning board for study. "They're looking for you to prepare a study to see if that meets the criteria for redevelopment," Jay said.
Board counsel described the standard process: the board adopts a resolution authorizing the preliminary investigation; a planner conducts the study and presents findings at a public hearing; the board then recommends whether the borough should deem the area, or a portion of it, in need of redevelopment under the applicable statute.
A board member moved to adopt the resolution and another seconded. The board conducted a formal roll-call vote and recorded affirmative responses, approving Resolution 2024-289 and directing the planner to proceed with the investigation.
The board did not open a public hearing on the referral at this meeting; the planner's report and any subsequent public hearing will occur later in the process.
