Butte County commission asks DWR for coordinated regional modeling and technical support

The Butte County Water Commission voted April 2 to recommend that the Board of Supervisors send a letter to the California Department of Water Resources seeking better coordination on regional groundwater modeling and technical support for local agencies.
Assistant Director Christina Buck said the county and its GSAs rely on a mosaic of models across the Central Valley and that inconsistent timing and limited technical capacity at many GSAs have made interbasin analysis difficult. The draft letter asks DWR to improve data exchange processes, coordinate update timing so local annual and five'year reporting needs can be met, and provide technical support or funding to help GSAs share model files and metadata.
Buck said discussions with DWR and local modeling teams suggested the agency is open to improving accessibility of the Central Valley fine'grid simulation model and to exploring ways to streamline data flows. She said the Technical Advisory Committee reviewed the draft letter and recommended it be forwarded to the commission.
Commissioner discussion was supportive; one commissioner thanked staff for the work and moved to approve the letter as drafted. The motion passed by voice vote.
The commission asked staff to include a summary of past modeling efforts and previous studies as appendices to future feasibility reports so decision makers have better background into earlier options and technical constraints.
