Seabrook authorizes Harris County virus sampling at wastewater influent

The Seabrook City Council on Oct. 15 authorized an interlocal agreement with Harris County Public Health to install an autosampler at the influent to the city’s new wastewater treatment plant for twice-weekly virus testing aimed at early detection of community infections.
A county representative described the program as county-funded and at no charge to Seabrook: the sampler would collect twice-weekly samples, send them to a laboratory for analysis, and provide data that could alert local hospitals to emerging viral trends. "They want to put a, an auto sampler at our influent to our new wastewater treatment plant... No charge to us, it's a free program," a staff speaker said.
Council asked clarifying questions about whether the sampler would collect pre-treatment influent (it would) and whether the program would include analysis beyond viruses (not at this time; expanded testing would be available if the city paid for additional services). Council moved and approved the agreement and authorized the city manager to execute associated documents.
