Residents urge Clemson council to act on homelessness, stormwater as development continues

Jupiter Chastain, who identified themself as a former Clemson student, said they were evicted from student housing in 2022 and relied on family to avoid homelessness. "How will the city work with local organizations to help our currently unhoused community members?" Chastain asked, urging council members and volunteers to mobilize shelter, clothing and food as winter approaches.
Rupert McGinty raised concerns about the Hub development adjacent to Clemson Memorial Stadium and the potential for increased runoff into the lake. He asked whether architectural and stormwater plans (including holding ponds) have been released and what will happen with the TIF the project had been expected to use. Council staff responded that Pickens County declined to move forward on the county vote, and the city is still considering workforce and attainable housing efforts related to the project.
The presiding official also read two submitted comments: one from Shelly Gear asking when hurricane-damaged trees blocking sidewalks on Pendleton Road will be removed as a safety hazard, and another referencing poor internet options along Lewis Road (Joshua Canalano’s address was cited).
The public comments did not result in immediate policy votes but flagged homelessness, stormwater planning for the Hub site, and sidewalk/tree removal as issues council staff said they will continue to monitor and coordinate with county and state partners.
