Council Approves Monument Sign Design for Newprigg Mill Gateway with Brick Base

The New Prague City Council approved a sign variance for the Newprigg Mill LLC gateway sign, selecting "revision 2," a monument‑style sign with a brick base, following staff presentation and applicant input.

Staff reviewed two sign revisions that the applicant submitted after Planning Commission review: revision 1 (an elevated post sign with a visible opening beneath the sign) and revision 2 (a monument sign with a solid base). Staff recommended revision 2 with a brick base for a finished monument look. Councilmembers asked about height limits, landscaping adjacent to a city easement, and whether decorative elements such as a waterfall could be incorporated; staff and the applicant said landscaping adjacent to existing streetscape plantings would likely be extended under the current proposal and that the brick base for revision 2 would be built up to about 5 feet in the final plan.

During the discussion councilmembers compared the proposals to other local signs and emphasized that gateway signage will be long‑lasting: "Once it's there, it's there," one councilmember said while urging higher aesthetic standards. Applicants and staff said landscaping would be coordinated with existing easement plantings and that the sign height conforms to the 30‑foot standard applied in comparable districts. The council approved the motion to adopt Sign Revision No. 2 by voice vote.
