Rowlett council issues proclamations, recognizes veterans and community winners

The Rowlett City Council set aside time at its Sept. 17 meeting for several ceremonial recognitions.
Deputy Mayor Pro Tem Schinder read a proclamation recognizing Sept. 17, 2024 as National IT Professionals Day in Rowlett and thanked city IT staff for maintaining critical systems. A member of the IT team accepted the proclamation and noted the department’s around-the-clock responsibilities.
Councilmember Alisa Bowers presented a proclamation designating September 2024 as National Food Safety Education Month and invited environmental health staff to discuss routine, risk-based food-establishment inspections (staff said the team conducts over 500 inspections annually and supports special-event vendors).
Mayor Pro Tem Winget and Laura Turner from the library presented first-, second- and honorable-mention awards in the Arts & Humanities Commission’s 2024 photo contest (theme: "hidden gems"), including cash prizes and a best-of-show award.
Finally, the council honored Reese Jacob Ellis, a 91‑year‑old Korean War U.S. Navy veteran, with a certificate and a Quilt of Valor presented by local volunteers; the veteran and organizers spoke briefly about his service.
These ceremonial items were presented at the start of the meeting before the council moved into business items.
