The Gonzales City Council approved companion ordinances to amend the future land use designation and rezone 418 Saint Michael Street to permit an expansion of parking associated with a Dairy Queen property adjacent to the site.
Staff told council the Planning & Zoning Commission unanimously recommended moving forward after public notices were mailed; during the hearing residents spoke both in favor and with reservations. Daniel La Cruz said additional parking would ease public-safety and congestion problems near the school and during events, calling the change a ‘‘public safety issue’’ in terms of on-street parking. Georgia, identifying herself as the property owner’s daughter, said the house on the lot is deteriorating and that sale and conversion to parking would be an improvement for the Dairy Queen operation and the neighborhood.
After brief council discussion the council approved Ordinance 2024-33 (future land use map amendment) and Ordinance 2024-34 (rezoning to C-1 light commercial) by voice vote.
Council emphasized notice procedures were followed and that staff recorded mailed notices and objection letters in the administrative record. The council did not set any special conditions on the rezoning at the meeting.
