Board extends conditional-use permit for Lake McConaughy campground/RV park

The Keith County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved a 12-month extension of conditional-use permit 23-21 for a proposed campground and RV park owned by Michael C. Lee (Lake McConaughey LLC) located on the south side of the lake and approximately 4.2 miles northeast of Highway 26. The property is zoned for tourist services; the original permit (Resolution referenced in staff materials) included conditions on emergency egress, water and wastewater, acceleration/deceleration lanes, landscaping/buffers and signage.

Staff told the board that no construction has begun and that the applicant applied for the extension before the permit expiration on Oct. 23, 2024. County zoning regulations allow an applicant to request up to a 12-month extension if submitted prior to the permit’s end date; the planning commission reviewed the request on Dec. 5 and recommended approval.

Commissioners voted to approve the extension; staff noted that because this is a large project even after an extension the owner may need to reapply if no progress occurs during the extension period.

The extension preserves the permit’s existing conditions; any future permit issuance will be contingent on the applicant meeting the outstanding requirements (designs for water/wastewater and road access improvements).
