Two local residents interview for South Summit Cemetery board

Incumbent Christie Baer and resident Jennifer Kim appeared remotely to interview for a vacancy on the South Summit Cemetery Maintenance District.

Baer, who is seeking reappointment, said she applied after finding her parents’ graves in the Francis cemetery and seeing problems with grave upkeep. “I applied for it in the beginning because my parents were buried over in Frances, and there was kind of an issue with the graves that year,” Baer said, and praised recent work to digitize records and restore wells. Council members asked about the cemetery registry; Baer said mapping and record updates have improved and that the Daughters of the Pioneers would be used to cross-check veteran listings.

Jennifer Kim introduced herself as a Francis resident with multi‑generation family ties in the valley and said she wants to help maintain monuments and support families who visit gravesites. “My family has been in the valley, for over a hundred years,” Kim said, and described prior committee and administrative experience that she said would be useful on the board.

Council members asked both applicants about maintenance, record accuracy and future priorities, including a veterans memorial project Baer described near Oakley and a request for a columbarium‑style area for cremains. There was no formal appointment at the meeting; the council said it would make a decision and notify applicants next week.
