Alief ISD unveils $9M schematic for Crump Stadium press box with ADA access and CTE production space

Alief ISD officials and PBK architects presented schematic designs on Jan. 23 for a planned renovation of the Crump Stadium press box and stadium lighting, describing the project as both a facilities upgrade and an extension of classroom CTE opportunities.

PBK's presenter described three guiding principles the PAT process used: create accessible, ADA-compliant spaces; serve student needs while balancing stakeholder expectations; and design for adaptability over the next 50 years. The recommended concept includes an ADA-accessible top-deck observation area so band members and visitors who use mobility devices can be seated with their peers, a first-floor multipurpose observation/film-deck for CTE recording and competition, and second-floor media and production space visible to the field.

Administration said the budget for the preferred schematic is roughly $9 million and recommended using $6 million from prior bond savings plus reallocating $3 million originally set aside for a natatorium project to fully fund the design. "These are bond funds and can only be used for facilities," the administration said while clarifying that bond proceeds cannot be used for salaries or operating expenses.

Trustees and staff said the project offers opportunities to enhance CTE programming, host band competitions and generate future revenue by holding events on site. No final funding approval was taken that night; the item was presented for review and discussion and staff described next steps for procurement and design development.

What's next: administration will refine the budget and timeline, complete further design development and bring procurement and funding recommendations to the board for approval.
