Library submits Ready to Read grant, expands Spanish-language collection and begins hiring

Library staff told the commission they submitted the annual Ready to Read grant application to the State Library of Oregon that day and reiterated that their usual request focuses on staffing support rather than only materials.
On collection development, staff reported adding 96 Spanish-language titles to the library’s holdings, with 73 checkouts of those purchased materials since Jan. 1. Staff said patrons prefer materials that originate in Spanish-language markets such as Mexico, though translated works are also welcome, and that they are conducting ongoing patron surveys to fine-tune acquisitions. Staff said Friends of the Library handles bookkeeping while fundraising remains necessary because the state pays about half of the program costs for the Dolly Parton's Imagination Library.
The commission was told the library is recruiting for two part-time library-aide positions, having received 90 applications; interviews are scheduled next week, with a goal of onboarding in mid-September and desk independence by Oct. 1 to support the fall programming schedule.
Staff also said they will present the annual report to the State Library (covering July 1, 2023–June 30, 2024) in the next meeting packet and that a commission vacancy (Juliet Rutter moved away) will be forwarded to the city council for approval before recruitment begins.
