Board directs pursuit of larger central services site to consolidate utilities, sheriff and fire storage

At the Sept. 17 meeting the Board voted 7–0 to pursue a larger option for a new central services complex, after a staff presentation showed two alternatives: a ~25‑acre site for just utilities operations or an ~80‑acre site that would accommodate utilities plus future multi‑department support functions.
Mike Overton, Capital Projects Program Manager, said the larger site would better meet projected outside storage, covered storage, warehouse and training needs for departments such as utilities, fire & rescue and the sheriff’s office. Overton presented rough assessed‑value ranges: roughly $420k–$728k for the smaller site and $1.7M–$2.4M for the larger parcel; he noted market purchase prices are likely higher than assessed values.
Supervisors asked about current capital funds and the land acquisition account; staff said the capital projects land account and the utilities land account each have approximately $3M available. The motion directed staff to pursue the larger parcel and to bring candidate parcels back to the board in closed session for approval prior to acquisition.
The motion carried unanimously; staff said detailed cost estimates and departmental layout work would follow if the board confirms a parcel.
