Board confirms multiple appointments, hears public comment and authorizes closed-session property actions

At its Sept. 11 meeting the Frederick County Board of Supervisors confirmed several appointments to boards and commissions, heard public comments on water planning and memorials, and authorized staff actions following a closed session on real-property acquisition and litigation briefing.

Appointments carried included Michael Stottlemyer to the Shawnee District Parks & Recreation seat and Molly Brannan (referred to in roll call as Molly Brennan) as the at-large Parks & Recreation representative; both nominations were approved by roll call (the at-large appointment drew multiple no votes). The board also reappointed three county representatives to the Northern Shenandoah Valley Regional Commission and appointed Amanda Whitson to the Northwestern Community Services Board.

During citizen comment, speakers urged the county to pursue large reservoir projects and federal funding to protect groundwater and water quality, asked the county to consider a memorial wall for fallen local officers and firefighters and 9/11 remembrance, and suggested integrating agritourism and nature-based learning into schools. The board acknowledged those comments and invited written submissions and follow-up.

The board then moved into closed session under Virginia Code §2.2-3711 (A.3, A.7, A.8) to discuss the acquisition of real property and consultations regarding probable litigation (related to the estate of Ian Strickler before the Virginia Workers' Compensation Commission). After reconvening in open session and certifying the closed-session matters by roll call, the board authorized staff to proceed with the purchase discussed in closed session and to take the actions regarding the Ian Strickler estate that had been briefed in the closed meeting. Motions passed by roll call and the meeting was adjourned.
